Just wondering, along the lines of this forum....im a fan of the XS1, but have only owned specials....i feel the special doesn't lend itself to a classic restoration wheras the XS1 etc does. Does anyone know what numbers were produced?

The serial no for the XS1 starts at S650-000101, the XS1B starts at S650-007101, both models had the 256 engine code.........I think only 7,000 XS1's.....................Nothing wrong with a restored special........

Hi Guys,

Would I restore a Special? Well, I'm making a mild cafe bike out of my 79 Special, so the answer is "Right now, no."

Five or ten years from now? Probably..... Laughing

I love the special 80 and up, with the 16" rear weel, front and rear discks tci...I have an 80 in great shape, so I can't bring myself to coustomise anything that cant be undun but I love improving it. I plan to get, in the future another 80 or up to make a soft tail bober.

I have a 78SE. I plan to do some custom work to it and go with a mild cafe style, but will keep the original parts so it can always be returned to stock condition. I see no reason to NOT restore a Special.

Hi Guys,

Remember when everyone began to collect the T120 Bonneville, but no one wanted the T100 Daytona Triumph? "Too small" and "not a classic" were what I heard. Now try to get a nice T100......

XS's are the same. Right now we are in a state of flux, and values are rising, with perhaps a little dip due to the depression--(yeah, might as well call it what it is). In the long run, with demand exceeding existing supply, the price can be expected to rise, and as the price goes up, the demand for original models of all kinds will go with it, meaning that the Specials will become as collectible as the early XS and TX standards.

Meanwhile, I'm gonna keep my 77' Stock, and make a neat little cafe bike out of the '79 Special, retaining the parts to return it to stock. Best of both worlds!

Anyway, I love 'em all!

Well I am really likeing the 78 Special I have now and am even getting used to the handle bars LOL although I am still thinking of changing them out. As Barbara stated above I will also be retaining all stock parts just incase.

Personally I like all of them, no matter the model or year. With some personal improvements and modernizations to them they're all classics! I remember my buddy buying a new 79 Special back in 79. I would restore a Special. It was a cool bike then and still are to me. Course not as cool as the 77s!
