I read here that harley triple trees will fit the xs, but cant find the forum. does anyone know if it is the big twin trees or the sportster trees? Before you answer yes they are different.

from what i have been reading using the harley trees you need to use the races from the tapered roller bearing kit for the 650 , then get a set of 1 inch wheel bearings for a small trailor. the 1 inch bearings fit the 650 races and the 1 inch stem of the harley trees. you may have to modify the top nut on the stem, the harley stem is a little shorter, 1/2 or 3/4 inch. thats how they made a springer type fork fit.

I hear that but which harley trees the sportster has a different stem then the big twin. I know this for a fact cause when I was building a sportster a while back the super glide trees wouldn't work.

that i'm not sure about the difference, if nobody on here knows, maybe you can ask on a harley site. about the difference between the sportster and super glide forks, just don't tell them you want put them on a yamaha.. if you can't get an answer then could you change the stem from a set of 650 tree to the harley forks, i've read thats how some do it.

Originally yes, but in 1973 they updated the FX and put larger forks on it. Thye discovered that the smaller XL forks were not heavy enough for the heavier FL frame and motor.

I know that the tubes are the same with the exception of 2" longer on the superglide in 78. the trees did not fit a 69 sportster. 78 sportster trees did, with the rest of the package being super glide.

As for stem changeing I have done that on 750 yamaha forks but was useing the same top clamp configuration. dont think you would get lucky enough to have the top configuration the same on a harley.

Why not go with a complete Sporty front end, only with the XS stem? Should be very workable.
