just put a "new" old motor.as soon i engage the 1st,it dies.so i guess the clutch is not seperating..?!

Or your sidestand switch is faulty, broken or sticking.

wait a minute.i put an 83 motor into a 72,i kept the 72 points ignition system..do i have a sidestand switch,now?!

I'd bet your right... it sounds like clutch drag to me.
You got it all adjusted properly? Locknut at the pushrod first.. tightened it til you felt it hit the pushrod and then 1/8 - 1/4 turn more?.. locked it up? fine tuned with the lever adjuster til you got about about an 1/8 - a 1/4 inch of free play at the lever?
I put a low mile bottom end from a 76 together, it hadn't seen use in over 15 years.. really sticky clutch and shifter for the first few oil changes, I seriously thought i was gonna break my foot from first up to second, but it's like butter now.

Before you try & start it, put it in 1st gear & hold the clutch in. Push the bike until the clutch plates come unstuck then start it up. Mine does that everytime it sets a few weeks, its normal for them, nothing wrong with it. If its going into gear smoothly & the motor quits, thats a whole different deal
