Ok here is my question. I have a 78 xs650 with drum brakes. I want to run a mag 16 on the back. There were only a few year rear drum mags made I guess and they are tough to track down. I have found one but still waiting to hear back on it. There is a rear disk one here at a local bike salvage I could snag up. Then I guess it would be finding all the rear brake components and welding a tab to the swinarm for the caliper. Anybody do this or have any better ideas?

lane, doe's the one at the salvidge yard have the swingarm? I have read here about people doing the swap, with very good result's. If the arm is available, get the whole assy. including the lever & pivot for the foot pedal.

I swapped the drum for a disc on my 75.
You will need the brake pivot shaft as well as the m/c and the caliper and mount. The drum pulls the rod forward, the disc brake pivot shaft pushes up to work the m/c.
I swapped out the swing arm, got one cheap. Welding a mount for the strut is not hard.
Getting the m/c mounts located and mounted in the right place was the hardest part. If where you get the wheel has the frame measure where the mounts for the m/c are on the frame. Take pics to, it will help.
When you get the wheel, get all the spacers if they have them. My wheel didn't come with them. I couldn't find any and had to grind down a to thick one to get every thing centered.
It was a lot of work, but well worth it. I also added dual disc to the front. I have great brakes.

If you want to save yourself some grief, you may want to track down a 1981 XS650 Special rear wheel. This was the only year that Yamaha produced a cast aluminum drum rear wheel for the XS650,and it is a 16" rim. This should be a direct swap for your application. I have an extra, but I don't want to quote a price and make someone cry. I have found that selling parts for less than I paid for them puts my profit (or,for that matter, break even) margin in the crapper. You can pm me if you are interested.

May find the Canadian heritage Specials had mag wheels and drum brakes. My 83 Heritage has them and that is a Canadian inport

Can't have cry babies on this site Laughing

I saw a single TXA/XSB muffler, singular, one, (no headers), sold for $415 US on ebay last week. Your exhaust and tins would sell for the $650 you were asking for the whole bike. Should be able to make a profit on the other parts and still sell for a reasonable price
