my 79 engine developed a pretty loud tick noise on the left side not long after I replaced the rings & did a valve seat-grind. It has been that way for a couple of years. The noise happens when the engine gets to & through TDC.
Any ideas if it could be?
thnx

Had a pronounced tick on my upper left side, turned out to be the intake valve. I had set the valves to .004 intake but the locknut loosened up after a short while. Cranked her down good the last time and so far so good.

I've quadruple checked my valve lash on this engine, always pretty close or in spec. I've tried the min & max spcs to see if it made a difference, but it did not.

Did you change the cam chain/guides when it was apart?
The guide can make a ticking noise if the plastic starts to seperate from the front guide!

That's why i took the engine apart in the first place, the chain was grinding on the bare guide plate. all the rubber had crumbled off & was dumped with the oil on that fateful oil change. usually, the noise from that is a constant metal-metal grinding sound.

I take it from your first post, that you can hear it when turning the engine by hand?
Before the front guide disintergrates, the guide material lifts off the metal, this gives a ticking sound, plenty of people here have come across before.....

But I guess if it's new, that shouldn't (not impossible though for a new old stock item to seperate early) be the problem.
Did you set the chain with a hot engine?

cam chain set while hot & running at idle. It only makes a single tick, even when rotating by hand around TDC. I pretty much don't think it's related to cam chain, no rubber in the oil since changing the guide. sounds more like a valve or ring. I used the acura rings to replace to keep stock piston/ring sizes. I may try putting heavy oil into the left cylinder to see if it dampens the noise any prior to disassembly.
