I have an 81 650. I bought the bike, put a brand new battery in it. rode about 250miles. ignition coil went, put a pamco on it, rode about 200 miles. battery is now dead. put it on a friends trickle charge for about 2.5 hours, rode home. battery voltage is 11.5v with motor off. 11.2v with motor on. with motor running i have 8.35v between the brushes.
i have checked the alternator circuts as per the clymers manual. according to it all circuts are bad. between each white wire and any of the other wires on the alternator connector to the harness i have 25.4ohms. between the stator housing and the white wires i have 0 ohms.
where do i go from here? am i testing it right?
please help i would really like to ride it to chillicothe this weekend!
thanks
hoagy

The alternator wiring comes up to a 6 pin connector and there is a single yellow wire next to the connector. Disconnect the 6 pin connector and the single yellow wire connector.
Measure resistance of the pins on the connector side coming up from the engine. Use lowest resistance scale. Measure each pair of white to white (3 combinations), and measure yellow to any one white. Measure from one white pin to engine casing, use high scale.
Remove both brushes. Measure resistance from one slip ring to the other slip ring (use low resistance scale). Measure from one slip ring to rotor body (use a high scale)
Tell us what numbers you get.

You need to get a new rotor (or rewind). Rotor should be around 5 ohms.
Try..........mikesxs............650central.............customrewind.com. Customrewind has a good reputation.
To remove the rotor you need the proper removal tool. Its sold by mikesxs, or some suppliers will lend you a tool.
