hey there, i just rebuilt my stock carbs for my 82xs650sj and got them on, the bike runs better than before besides the backfiring (simple fuel/air adjustment).

the problem i have is that when ever i grab the clutch to coast to a stop, my engine reves up to 4000rpm.

i checked the throttle and clutch cables and they seem to be fine and work properly.

anyone else have any ideas or tips?

After a carb rebuild, there's a couple of things that need to be done. Adjust the air/fuel mixture (pilot screws) using the "dead cylinder method". Adjust the synchronization of the 2 carbs. I like to use a U tube manometer to sync carbs, but others just use a vacuum gauge. That should bring down the RPM, unless you also have air leaks.

650garage.com has a very good "Carb Guide". Have a read through it.

i'll definatly read through it and just sit down with a tank of gas messing around with the carbs.
i also asked my teacher at school (he is the one who got me into motorcycles) and he recomended that i reroute the throttle and clutch cable. so i'll be trying that out as well.

i'll keep an update on what happens

If it was a cable problem wouldn't it be a problem all the time?

Thats what i thought but it happened 80% of the time but i figured what the heck and routed the cables a little differently. after a quick ride it all worked, every time i grabed the clutch my rpm went down to idle.
i'm hoping that was it but who knows

That is about easy as it gets then. Thanks for the follow up. May fix a problem I have someday.

no problem. i still have to tinker with the carbs a bit, they started to backfire a bit when i slow down. i believe that its running a tad too lean
