i have a good battery and its charging ok but the starter motor just clicks or turnes over very slowly as if the battery is flat is it worth takeing the starter out and giveing it a good clean and is it a big job

I'd check out all the connections first. When I got my bike, the starter didn't even work at all - no clicking, no nothing. Turned out to be nothing more than a rusty main cable connection down on the starter motor. That lower connection hangs down under the motor and is subject to all sorts of road grime, water, etc. The rubber cap that covered my connection had a split in it so all that stuff was able to get in.
