Hey all, thought I better start my build thread. Wanted to build a bobber style bike and loved the look of the xs so after a long time looking (like hens teeth in Aus) found “rusty”. An 81 650 Special. So here’s the before pics

First goal is to get it running right before body mods, So out came the oil. 4 litres!!! Was I nervous of the possible damage! Replaced both filters, adjusted Cam tension, Drive chain tension, Valve clearance, timing and removed the old air cleaner. 44 kicks later I turned to kill switch to “run”. Wow was my leg sore. One kick and bang, had it running. Left cycl sounded a lot stronger! Then I realised one muffler was 10” shorter! Ha both reverse cone’s, one 26” one 17”. So off they came. Installed mikesxs airpods fired it up and took it for a spin. Bit of poping and farting but went well. Checked the plugs after and were running a little lean. I have since changed the Fork oil (see post in Frames), cleaned the forks and changed the twin disc front pads. Have since ordered a new reverse cone muffler to match the old one. Will clean it up. Going to sync the carbs using yard stick trick and dead cycl method. Can the speedo cable be used for the tacho? Its missing? Anyway enjoy the build, or don’t, cause I am having a blast. You guys are worth your weight in XS’s. Thanks.

Cost me $1000 neat. Which is 750US. Which is prob expensive over there but for a running XS650 here I think is ok? Didn't really have a guide to go on but im happy with it.

That isn't a bad price for a running bike at all. I got mine dirt cheap but it was far from running. I can't wait to see what you do to it... Keep us posted with updates and pics!!!

So just thought id give a quick update, Got the new muffler today and put it on. The reducers aren't a great fit unfortunately. What I think are the stock pipes have sort of a flared section on the end with a larger diameter then the rest of the pipes. The reducer fits over the pipe but the muffler wont fit over the pipe with reducer? but is to loose without it? Guessing I need a thinner reducer. Will try and make them myself I think. Also heard of some people using cut up tin cans? So anyway here is a pic of the pipe on. sounds great and has a removable baffle. Will let you know how I go!

fresh high quality aluminum beer cans work best, so don't just pickup any old cans you have laying about, properly chilled and then freshly emptied ones work best
some overlap on the shim is ok and if you make these little tabs it won't slide in to deep, alittle hi-temp rtv silicon helps seal them too

So i waited till the girl went to work and got to the beer. Made the first from a can but wasn't a great fit. So ended up using a thin sheet of aluminium. Worked perfect and no leaks. Sorry the update took a while but here is Sth Qld we're kinda undergoing some cyclonic weather. Enjoy the pics.

OK so its been a little while since I have had a chance to play with the bike, but im back into it. I have put on a new set of bars. Love them and in my opinion look alot better then the old ones. Alot more comfortable as well. Still need to tidy all the elecs up and remove old Gauges but that comes last. What do you guys think?

Man im having a ball. So I have done some more to the bike. I was having a few elec problems so being a male, ripped the whole wiring system out. Thanks to the help of a few diagrams here i have totally rewired my whole bike! I have kept it nice and simple, here in Aus the specials still had the seperate rec/reg so that was fun. I have even moved the ignition switch to the little compartment thing on the right side of the bike.
After rewiring, I stripped down the front end a little, new gauge from Mikesxs looks great. Alot cleaner, likewise new grips.
Never painted in my life so being male thought, i try painting. Wanted to go a gloss black but figured for my first time ill go a matt finish. Very Cliche i know, but hey, it my first time. Have done the tank and fenders so far.
Anyway here are some pics so far with the tank sitting there. I want to try and have it running in the next few days.
Oh and a massive thanks to Rick_in_PDX who has help me out with some stock front tubes!! there on the way from the US as we speak. Thanks mate.
