I guess the real question is weather or not the frame is powder coated or painted-it's a 79 special. If it's painted, it'll strip easily. If it's powder coated I assume I'll have to have it blasted.

Does anyone know how they were finished from the factory?

Painted, sand up easy with a small detail sander with a velcro pad & 5hit loads of paper!

Couldn't I just douse it with a good aircraft stripper and get into the tight spots with a wire brush. Sanding it all off sounds like a lot of work.

Air craft strip works good, Ive yoused a grinder with a large wire wheel. (just be shure to wear a shield) This worked great on a p.o. 70s frame that was filled with bondo. It takes every thing down to the bare frame except the tight spots.

Sand it if you just like doing the work, but 20-30 minutes in a blast cabinet will strip a powder coated frame to a bare metal frame including every nook & cranny you can imagine. At $1.50 minute, that's under $50 and the drive to rent the cabinet will take longer than the job itself. No cleanup either, just a very clean frame with the perfect tooth for paint to adhere to.

Cheers,
- JJ

Are you going to paint the frame? If so, just sanding the paint enough to remove the shine will let a coat of paint stick to it. Some of the paint men I have talked to say that the factory primer sticks to the metal better than they can prime bare metal. They like to just rough up the factory paint and shoot right over the factory paint.
If you want to powdercoat the frame it will need to be stripped to bare metal.
