Yeah oil is kind of important, good thing you thought of it Wink Seriously though there's a procedure for getting the timing about right without the bike running and it's pretty much a joy compared to some bikes, even similar age Yamahas. Marks for where the spark should fire at idle and at speed are stamped on the left side of the crankcase outside the alternator. You put a light or beeper on the points, rotate the crank with a wrench and adjust the points so the light/noise turns off as you hit the timing mark. It can be worse, Yamaha didn't bother making these kind of marks on the RD line which was out at the same. You have to fix a dial gauge into the spark plug hole and set the points to break at 1.8mm btdc. Not so much harder when it's not running, but if there's a way to check it running with a strobe to see if it's advancing right I haven't found it.

haha funny guys.....put that in last night. pshew.

Yeah this timing thing is going to be the most interesting part. How do you turn the crank with a wrench? I was thinking about using the kick starter....what are you turning on with a wrench?

I was reading about doing the timing in the manual, but my manual is so old it has no covers, and it just so happens that the last page I have ends right in the middle of setting the timing. I've done some searching here, but the XS board search just seems to return the same threads for everything and the google one is hit and miss for me.

I'll post back with more when I get some more parts and fun stuff to write about.

P.S. I stuck Castrol GTX 20W-50 in the engine....thoughts?

I ran yamalube in college, but that stuff is expensive
