Here's the skinny --

I bought my '81 XS 18 months ago at a dealer in Illinois. It ran when I got it, but IT ONLY RAN on full choke, AT IDLE. When I tried to shut the choke off or roll on throttle, it fell on its face and died, just like I'd shut the switch off. I started it and tried it at least a dozen times and every time the result was the same.

Without changing anything, I started looking very closely at the carbs. They looked like they hadn't been properly installed but were rather sort of smeared on the bike. I mean the carbs were crooked on the stock manifolds; the conical filters were slightly crushed and didn't really fit very well; the throttle cable housing had a couple of breaks in it. In short, they looked like they'd been pulled rather roughly off of one bike and smeared on this machine by somebody who was in a big hurry and didn't really give a s***.

I didn't like the look of them. I ordered a set of new VM-34s from Michael Morse at 650central.

I got the new carbs last fall, just before the weather turned bitter. I didn't install them then because it was rather crisp out in the garage and I don't like to work in a cold room. So I've kept the new carbs in the house until a few days ago.

Last Wednesday, I finally took a hatful of tools out to the garage and I pulled those old carbs off the bike. I sat 'em up on the bench. I removed the throttle cables and the float bowls, the better to drain all the fuel out of them and to let them air-dry for a few days. I figured the postmaster will like them better if they don't drip and reek.

One of them seems in perfectly good shape. The other is missing the main-jet needle clip. The slide goes up and down alright, and the needle is present. It's not bent or broken. But it doesn't move up and down with the slide; instead, the slide moves up and down around the needle. So I think I found one problem there.

Another thing about them: alongside my brand-new VM34s, the old carbs look big. I got out my dial caliper and measured the inside diameter of the carb throat at 36.45 mm.

Thus the bottom line is: these are used 36 mm Mikuni roundslides. I have no idea what they originally came off of or how they are jetted. I'm certain that they never worked on this bike because they were never properly installed. At least one of them is missing a needle clip. I didn't disassemble either of them any farther than I've already told you and, now that they've dried out for a week, I put the float bowls back on 'em and replaced the slides. I'm not a carb guy. They look OK except for what I've told you.

You want them? You take them as-is. My price is $200 U.S. plus shipping. You send me a postal money order for cost plus shipping (I'll let you know how much when I find out where you are). I'll box 'em up nice and send 'em U.S. mail to you at the address of your choice.
