the stock trees are not wide enough for the 16" mag wheel. I would wrather make new trees than mill the rim center and use a skinnier tire. I want a fat tire on the front as well as the rear

Seems like way too much work for the results your gonna get. Didn't Hunter S Thompson commit suicide?

Yes,but it was unlikely that it pertained to an XS650 front wheel swap.

Making new trees is far too much work. I'd try fitting a katana FE ... 17 inch sport tire for braking and handling cannot be beat.
Cool.

if you think making your own one off parts is too much work for ANY result, then you missing the entire point of building a chopper/bobber.

I think it would look better with the fat front tire

Hunter S Thomson: Thompson died at his self-described "fortified compound" known as "Owl Farm" in Woody Creek, Colorado, at 5:42 p.m. on February 20, 2005, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

its very subtle but it makes a huge illution, IE: makes my forks look longer, and if you look the engine has a slight fwd tilt now, I think it give the bike a moving wile sitting still feel....... and the tank that being built is over the top crazy

Y'know I've been thinking ... if I end up keeping this XS into next winter ... my mod will be to goose neck it and fit an upper frame rail that humps up almost like the upper line of the tank. That way the frame can be far enough away form the motor and the tank can hang from the frame and I can lift the head and pistons off with the motor still in the frame.
6 inches oughta do it, I'll check when I put my rephased motor back in ... and if I mod it that way, I can overbore it wihtout taking it off the frame.
Just remove head and cyls and swap pistons, bore etc etc and done.
Cool.

Well Srinath, if you replace the case studs while you've got it apart, you can then get the head etc off insitu thereafter!

Oh yea great, but I've heard it would be bad cos they will vibrate loose ?
I am all for doing stuff like that. Kawasaki's eliminator motors are that way. Dunno what else is, but those definetly are.
Cool.

Hi Rick, one way out is to use Harley front end, trees, forks and even switch to laced wheels front and back if you like. I run a 16” Yamaha mag on the front with my leading link front end and forgot about the speedo until I was putting it together LOL…. Many ways to get a 16” on front but the Harley parts would be easiest. Also stock axel sizes are different front and rear so you would need to machine legs as well if you were to use the Yamaha parts. Brakes are another thing as well to figure out. And I agree with you that chopper building is about doing what you want and not to compromise because something may be hard to do; you start compromising and where do draw the line? It’s the things that are hard to do that give you the most pleasure when bike is done. Good show so far keep doing it the way you want and DO NOT COMPRIMIZE because of difficulty. Wink
