I see that MikesXS has a fuel tank that fits 74-84 XS650's.
I have a 1980 XS400, will this tank fit my frame using my stock tank mounting locations?
Any info will be very appreciated. Thanks!

I think it will your tank part is # 2L0-24110-00-6J the part number for a 1980 xs650 tank is # 3G1-24110-00-H9 if you look at this pic of what the numbers mean outside of model and color they should match... you might want to wait maybe someone with a 400 and a 650 will have more info

I picked up a XS400 Tank I have not compared them with my special. I was thinking it was bigger I think it will need moded to fit. I will check tomorrow its from a 77 XS400.

I tried the 77 xs400 tank on my 81 special the front mounts seem to work fine, the rear mount is real close, I couldn't get it to fit all the way down the petcock is more forward and was hitting on the engine.
other than that it looked like it will work but on my bike, but the petcock will need some serious R&R.

For you the petcock may be wrong.

When it warms up a bit I will remove the petcock and try the fit again.
Winter is here 15deg and windy its not fun to be out side even in the shed.

Regarding part numbers, Yamaha uses an “intelligent” part numbering system that tells you about the part if you know how to read the number, as jayel's picture shows.
The second set of five digits (the "basic code"), is the number of the item. “24110” is a fuel tank. Every Yamaha fuel tank will have “24110” in the part number, just like every kick-start lever is “15660”, and every front fender is “21510”. (As with everything, there are variations, but you get the point.)

The first three digits (the "model code"), is exactly that, the bike model.
So 367-24110-00-00 and 4NK-24110-00-00 are both fuel tanks, but one is from an 80cc dirt bike and the other 1300cc cruiser.

This is a great system, but in no way guarantees parts may be interchangable even though the part numbers are similar, so be careful when cross-referencing parts and part numbers.

good post Cap, helps explain things why the model number is important, been looking for a cross reference cmsnl used to cross between the models but doesn't now

Thank you for the insight. It sounds like I need to find a donor XS650 and see if the tank will work. Any locals in the Boise, Meridian, Nampa ID area???
