My 80 has electronic points/ignition..... my 77 has points......... what do I need to take off of the 80 and put on the 77?, can I just swap the "points" and ignition parts? or do I also need to swap the stator?
wireing isnt an issue since I will be re-doing all of that after the 77 is bolted in and running

if you switch the stator and rotor you can use the 80's TCI, the rotor has the magnetic firing trigger and the stator because that is where the pick-up is mounted, then the 80's coil will need to be used you won't need any of the points or advance mechanism from the 77, note the brush assembles are different between the years, so you will also be able to use the 80's combined reg/rec instead of the separete reg/rec of the 77

jayel-can you be more specific on that? In my mind I'm guessing it must be setup close to what the reg/rectifier mods ends up being?

Well, i was on the right track. Didn't even think about the rotor or reg/rect.

bottom line...? just swap out all the 80 stuff onto the 77 engine. wire it with the elctronic diagram that is here in the vault?................its going to be a simple swap and go basicly?

That was what I was planning to do as well, putting an 78 engine in an 82, I am getting an 80 cam shaft, and fitting the left side rotor etc etc onto the 78. Of course I have TCI and R/R on the 82 already. I am doing a motor swap.
Cool.

Because the 82 cam is in the bike, and the 78 motor is out, and to swap a cam the motor has to be out.
y mechanic (car mechanic who's helping me swap the motor) doesn't have a shop that is conducive to me doing stuff that requires a little bit of attention.
So I need a camshaft I will swap into the motor, take the points cam out and then we do a motor swap. I am actually even wondering how to get the starter etc swapped ... cos its a lot of work getting it out with the engine in the frame, and very very easy with it out.
aybe I'd have the guy gimme a few mins so I can get the starter out of the motor I just got out, put it in the motor I am putting in and be good.
Cool.

so there really is not diff from the 80 cam and the older one? just swapping cause you have the engines out?

the 78 would have the grounded brush on one side 80 and later it goes thru the reg/rec, as far as the cam goes part # 447-12170-00 for the 78,
part # 3G1-12170-00 for the 80, so model number is different but that's it no need to change it unless the cam is bad

I thought we can rephase only the points engine. I am going to cut and re weld the cam shaft with my rephase not do a proper megacycle. That was why I wanted the 78 cam ... I guess I could just pull the timing bits out, but hey, I am sorta clueless when it concerns points motors.
I am pulling it cos I plan to sell it separate ...
Cool.

You are asking for trouble cutting and welding the camshaft to rephase. Don't think it will last, hate to think of the damage a snapped cam will do to the engine...........for the sake of a few dollars.........Just my 2 cents worth
