I am changing the fork oil on my 82 xs 650 and I have been reading through all the posts. I drained the oil from the forks and let them drain over night. I have since removed the caps and am confused about when a syringe is needed. I can just add the oil at the top of the forks right ?

There is a plate on top of the spring where the adjuster pushes down, do I need to remove this before adding the oil or can I just add it on top of this.

I know there are many different opinions about oils and I have read the posts and decided I am going to use 10w fork oil. My service manual didnt specify an amount for an 82 but I found a post with a page from another manual that said 159cc. Is this correct for an 82 ?

Thanks

I think I put around 6oz. That little "coin" on the spring i'd get it out of the way just to make the oil pour a little neater. The syringe is just for mesurments.

Does the "coin" just pull out ? I tried to pull it out with a magnet with no success. Do I need to give it a little persuasion ?

The one on mine came out by the spring pushing up on it because I didn't have the front held up so when I took 2nd the cap off the bike droped on forks and spring was exposed , if I remember corectly. I am suprised it didnt come right out maybee it is stuck from age.

The specs I have found.
Front fork oil capacity:
164 - 172 cc (5.54 - 5.82 oz)
each side.
So you're pretty much there. What did the old oil look like? Doesn't seem like much does it? 6 oz or so?
