Swingarm question

HEy guys I'm currently working on my first build and have a question. Is there a trick to removing the swingarm? I've taken the nut off of it and supposedly it should be "easy" to get off now.....lol. I have a 79 xs650 special. Is there a trick to it? or any help would be greatly appreciated.

G'day Bert, welcome to the site.
Looks like your gunna need a bigger hammer! lol
I take it you've got the bike on a stand or whatever, and the shocks off?
They can get pretty tight in there!
Spray CRC into all the gaps, and using a good drift & a gympie, you should be able to get it moving. Have heard of some needing heat, wouldn't think that'd be needed. but??? Pump a bit of grease in there wouldn't hurt either!

Remove the nut and grease nipple and hit with small sledge hammer. Move to progressively smaller hammers Smile

and a piece of pipe or something for a drift.

yamaman- Far be it from me to offend a brother from down under but what the hell is a gympie? I'm guessing a tool of some kind...? And why is it called that?

Yeah, like a small 1 handed sledge hammer, 5lb or so I guess.

Not sure exactly why they're called gympies, I do know Gympie is a town in Queensland, Queenslanders tend to be rather direct in their actions "as subtle as a sledgehammer" Laughing

Bert, you did remove the long bolt that goes thru it, right? The one that has grease fittings on each end. OK,OK, now do what the other's have suggested. It will come out, but, like yamaman said, some have had to heat the swing arm near where it pivot's in the frame. Stuck bushing's would cause that. Pump's, from what I gather, it's gotta be a slide-hammer of sort.Gympie, sound's like a couple who pollute our shout column. RR/JTT. That's what a sad state our world is in, when you got nothing better to do than create dissension among people who, for the most part, want to help other's. Ahhhrg, just call me Elmer.

Oh yea and welcome, a good soak with some penetrate and a bash with a drift and pody will work wonders.........Take out the grease nipple first Shocked

Hey guys thanks for all the replys. I just had to spray it with pb blaster and beat it with a hammer lol and a metal rod to push it on through.
Got it out last night, now I'm working on getting one of the forks off thats being a booger. I guess when something has been mounted for 30 years it can be a little tough lol. But I would imagine the forks have been off in that time. For the most part it's down to the frame and motor now, time to get the hardtail welded on. Thanks guys.
