Bike doesnt track right, either handle bars are bent or triple trees bent. Whats the best way to check them ? Have new set of trees if needed but old ones have tapered bearings in them. Anyone have any luck loosening everything up and trying to straighten by hand ?

Place the triple tree on a perfectly flat surface and clamp it down. The warpage will then be apparent.

Here's mine after my encounter with the SUV. Note the left (actually right) side is not flat to the surface of the workbench. I used a strip of aluminum for the flat surface.

If one is warped, so is the other.

If everything is straight, then it may work to loosen everything, including the fender, and re tighten starting from the top down except for the yoke pinch bolt and yoke nut which is done last.

1. Tighten upper fork pinch bolts.
2. Tighten tower fork pinch bolts
3. Tighten Axel nut and clamp.
4. Tighten Fender bolts.
5. Loosen the upper fork pinch bolts
6. Tighten yoke nut.
7. Tighten yoke pinch bolt.
8. Re-tighten the upper fork pinch bolts.

The reason that you loosen the upper fork pinch bolts before tightening the yoke nut and yoke pinch bolt is to allow the upper triple tree to move down with the tightening. However, you want the yoke nut and yoke pinch bolt to be loose when you initially tighten the upper fork pinch bolts so the forks will align themselves.

Remember that all of these bolts and nuts have a specific torque requirement. Some of the torque specs are much less than you would expect for the size nut or bolt, so consult your manual for the correct torque values.

Remember to tighten the axle nut before you tighten the axle clamp on the left end of the axle. If you tighten the axle clamp first, then tightening the axle nut will pull the bottom ends of the forks together.

To check for front to rear wheel alignment, use a laser level held to the sides of the rear tire. Mark where on the floor the laser beam is next to the front tire and then check for equal distance and parallel to the sides of the front tire.

If you cannot get the lines to be equal distance and parallel by adjusting the chain adjusters within 1/16" of each other, then the frame is bent.

Other than comparing the bars to a known good set (new) it's difficult to determine if the bars are bent. Suffice to say that if you get the front end aligned, the bars will take care of themselves, if they're straight.

there is a way but you have to remove grips switches ect. center of the bars pushed into a angle of a work bench, level both bar ends should touch without the center rocking then some simple measurements
