I lost my Mentor who was guiding me through the Valve Job I was doing on my 81 XS650, I sent the head out & reassembled the Head & cam Chain & then (this is the point I lost my Mentor) I attempted placement of the Head Cover (Using Haines & Clymer Manuals) I placed the HC on & it would not sit Flush with the Head. My suspicions are that the Cam needs to be rotated so there is no lobe in the upright position. True?
Unfortunately I screwed the pooch , In pulling the cover off & on I inadvertantly bent one of the Bushings & need to replace it ,
Can any one walk me through the spaces that the Manual does not exsplain.
The Torquing specs in Both Manuals leave a lot to be desired, but i found the specs (You would think they would be included in the chapter devoted to Reassembly but the ink must be too costly to include it at that point.
I feel like a fool Having bent the bushing, I guess I let the Humidity & stress get to me.
HELP!!

You need to back off the valve clearance adjuster screws (tappets). which will allow the rocker cover to fit down properly.

Where is this damaged bushing? Can you post a picture?

Good Morning R.G.
Right now the bushing is jammed in the Head Cover, I did a real Rookie mistake & forced it in. This is one of the 4 bushings (roll formed I suspect )with the o-ring that goes on the outer 4 stud holes. The rolled over end is upset it would be tricky to try to bring it back to form.
If i can't find one I'll have to get one made. Mikes doesn't carry them. They are supposed to be "Pressed" in but mine were quite loose,
Any sugestions about a source for this? I'd like to replace them all.

Hi Matt, are you talking about the dowel pins, #2 in this diagram?

www.biker.net/77-79_65...0main.html

I'd try Yamaha, you might find that it's a part common to some other models perhaps...........Or even that it's a stock item. It happens sometimes!

Cheers

In fact, I put that part # into google, and it came up as a outboard engine dowel, so thats interesting! Some part numbers translate to other Yamaha stuff! I wonder what else is out there????
So I'd reckon no probs getting it at your local Yamy dealer!

I did indeed, even better than I first thought! I've certainly added that site to my faves!

Boats .net didn't have it or their site isn't set up for E-commerce, there was a message saying Yamaha didn't support the part, They had a wish List and a phone #, no ordering. But they had a price posted of $5.24
Anyway I found someone who had it
