Just wanted to let you guys know, I see many posts on this issue and mine was an easy fix. Had problems with idle backfiring and dropping off or dying at 1500 rpm's. It would also climb after warming up to around 2000 or more rpm's. Checked for intake leaks and found none. Was ready to tear into carbs, pull the advance rod & grease but 1st I thought I'd check the point gap. These sets may have 1000 miles or better on them. Found the gap had closed so far that I couldn't get the guage between the points even at the min. setting (.012 - .016 for a '76 C model). Reset the point gap to .013. The motor purrs like new and no more backfire or erratic idle problems. I hope this helps someone. Check the easy stuff first. Good-luck. G.

I am having similar problems. Idle is fine when I open the throttle it dies or I have to feather it to get it past 1500 and then will run well. Sound like points to you?

do you know off hand the points setting for a 78 xs650?

I dont know if you ever fixxed your problem miller0613 but it sounds like points to me, i had the same problem, and replaced the points with the right gap, and wow what a differance! good luck!

Point gap is .012 to .016 on all models.
