Maybe I've just missed it before. I was removing an old tire and noticed the direction of travel arrow is one way as a front tire and the other if used as a back tire. Is this standard practice or a fluke?

just that tires recomendation I've seen them before usually on bikes that use same sizes front and rear

It's to do with the tyre construction. Where/how the belts join ect.

Pretty sure that the direction arrows for rear fitting, make it so accelerative forces can't upset/break the belt join. On the front it's braking forces, so you need to turn it around!

All that sounds about right. Some tires are universal tires, can be mounted front or rear. I took off a Continental tire that was that way. It cam on the 16" disc brake wheel I bought.
