Hey All!

Just joined... just picked up a 79 XS 650 the other day and started on its rebirth. Question though..

I know its a 79 (Frame sticker in tact) but Im not sure why the serial number isnt the same as the id guides Ive read. I do live in Canada so that might have something to do with it.

Also, frame and engine are different numbers...

Frame: 447911296
Engine: 447800763

If anyone knows whats up let me know!

Thanks!

Here are some charts for you to check with Web Page Name These are in the Vault under ID Charts...........According to every thing i read your bike is a 77D, Engine and frame, just not a matching no 77D.......Is your frame a Standard or Special frame. Go to no 4 on the link i gave you then you can ID your frame...........hope this helps

Thanks for the chart links!

Its a 79 alright. The frame sticker has a date of 10/78.

XS650SF 2M1 447-910101 1979 Black Gold, Carmine Red

I guess several happened during its lifetime.

1: The engine was changed for some reason.
2: The wheels were replaced with spokes from another model year.

I have the Special passenger foot peg mounts. So the frame jives with the charts and pictures but the engine is from an earlier bike.

Also, I noticed the speedo (which is totally mint) is off another model as the back light color glows blue/green and the tachometer glows orange/yellow.

I guess it makes the best choice for my bobber project.

Thanks for your help.

Picture huh? Yuck... well here ya go.

This bike was sitting for 4 plus years against a wood pile outside under a tarp. The previous owner painted the frame (and everything else) green. I just looked at the picture he gave me before he let it rot and noticed the mag rear wheel and the spoke front wheel.

I paid 500 CDN for it. It took me a year to find an XS here. I did find 2 more before hand but they were complete bikes and one was in excellent shape. I didnt want to bobber a complete mint XS.. that would be wasteful in my opinion.

Oh ya... This picture is after I removed the following:

Seat (custom? piece of steel with vinyl tapped underneath)
Battery box
Chain and rear sprocket (rusted together)
Headlight and Gauges (kept the speedo)
Headlight brackets
Brake system front (all rusted pistons and seized)
Chainguard
Wiring harness (whats the word... butchered?)
Foot pegs
Custom side covers made from tin (he thought I should chrome them.. )

And 2 pounds of rusted bolts.

Maybe the wheels and gauges came off the standard....in the photo the top gauge on the left is off the 76C, both on the right are off a 78SE/79SF, the top one is of a US bike the bottom is off a Canadian, Under the C gauges are a couple of Instrument panels of the 77/8/9 Standard....

Ya my speedo is the one of the top left and my tach is the one on the right or bottom right. My gauge cluster base is the one on the bottom left.

The weird thing is, the speedo has a chrome case cover.

This truly is a bike from other bikes XS. Does make it interesting though.

Nice stash of parts you have there Very Happy

The C and D speedo was the same and the E and F were different. The buckets are the same profile from the C's up, started to chrome them with the Specials
