Martin plate sprocket..........have the center hole machined and then heat to 1550 (medium red) and drop in water....then paint.......will have to relieve the hub a bit ............29 is pretty good..............

Are you already using an 18 up from........

Yea mate I have 18 on front , have 30 on rear. It is 200 kms to nearest city here so that is why I am looking for less rpm on highway.
A 29 would be better than 30, where do you get them ?

Nudude..........would those sprocket specialist ones still have to be machined to fit the hub.........if so a steel Martin would be a bunch cheaper and way better ......can be hardened..........aluminum..yuck............

I'm not sure about the machining John, that is a part # for the XS bikes. But yea, I'm kinda with you on the aluminum, although mine has been wearing well.

snap, one of your country men are making a lower ratio primary gear set. It will bring the engine revs way down , even with the stock sprockets. I did a little guesstimating and the use of his primary gear set, to get about the same overall gearing as stock. A 17 front and a 42 rear. If I remember right with the stock final gears with the different primary will give like a 1000 rpm drop at sixty mph. Can't find my notes, I'm probably guesstimating wrong anyway. Something to think about anyway.

I don't know how many left, but they are a bit pricey. Quite the Idea.

If it's geared much higher that 18/28 or even that it better be tuned right for low rpms........will be fun doing slower corners.........and first gear will become from hell........and 5th gear is the weakest in there.......for sure........

Might ask them if it is high carbon steel so you can harden it..... xsjohn

With the primary gears that Ivan makes, (the ones you guys are talking about, and he has sold out), I have been told to run,(and that is what people are running) a 17/36 combo for the road. ................I was taking to Ivan and he has run the 17/34 combo with his primary gears on his race bike. That is an 840 rephrased with head work............. With the new primary gears it speeds up the gearbox making the changes smoother, and he hasn't modified the clutch to much as i recall

I've read a little about the primary gears and how they will give more speed for racing.
I thought that they will work well to give lower rpm's at regular cruising speeds. With a little guesstimation, I figured with the new primary with 17/34 sprockets, 4500 rpm will be about 90 mph. The stock gears an 17/34 sprockets give about 60 mph.
With the New primary and 17/34 sprockets at 60 mph will be around 32-3500 rpm. Not a bad cruise rpm. If it proves to be to tall a set up, changing to a larger rear sprocket can be installed.
y guesstimations may be off. The gear ratio calculator I use was down. I used a regular calculator and notes on paper.

I'm running a 17/32, with stock primarys and turning 3100@55mph, 3400@60mph and 3900@65mph.

Running an 18/29 would almost require a push start in 1st gear, let you run in normal traffic in 4th and still allow you to use 5th to enter another time zone.

Would going through the trouble to change the primarys be worth it when you can easily change the sprockets to get the same results for much less money Question

Good guestion, I was just just thinking about the possible benefits, not so much the price.

Yea I have to push start my 18/29....what.....I'm not a sprocket salesman........but found what makes since to me..........ran 18/30 for years but just didn't cut it........might be a bit much with an oversized 18" tire though....back to 18/30 in that case...........but with taller gears you needl to read just the timing for more torque.........timing on these is all wacked up for the high revs.......at least the electronic later ones are.....did run 18/30 on my 77 and the timing was retarded for that one too though............

sure wouldn't want to gear my bike with just first gear as a consideration.......unless I was only using it to check the mail....... Laughing

It's basically a matter of either pulling the left case cover and loosing a few chain links or diving into the wet side and discovering that it's not worth the effort. I would personally prefer to play with the chain side to try to get the required results.

In Snap's situation of a long distance run it might be worth the effort, but traffic on either end of the trip could be hard on the bike.

I'm not sure of how the math on the taller primarys would work but here is the ratio chart for sprocket refrence.

I stay in 4th around town mostly...........5th is now for going somewhere......more pleasantly.....

and if I was going cross country it would be a 28........ always have 4th for the mountain grades.......... would be same as stock 5th or there abouts......4th would be 3800 at 60 with 18/28.......

WTF ever happened to Pony Express? Mad

I could if the peace pipe hadn't killed him.

Damned Indians, just because the democrats gave them smallpox infested blankets to keep warm didn't mean they had to take it out on poor ol' George. After all, he was only trying to do his job.
