Hey guys,
So I figured out that my bike isnt charging. I can start it after charging the battery on trickle over night, but as soon as I turn the headlight on, bike dies. I put a volt meter at the batt, 11.5 after charging with key off. Once the bike starts it drops down to around 9, revving the engine doesnt charge it up at all, and the number starts to only go down from there.
So, I pulled off the alternator cover and checked the brushes, the front one was shorter but still well above 1/4 of an inch, I switched them around to see if hitting it from another angle would help. It didnt.
So my question is where I do I go from here? Test the stator? How would I do so.
Bike: 81 engine in a 79, wiring has been cut down, ie no fuse panel, instead its running blades in line etc.
Thanks
Dallas

Try reading this for starters:
xs650temp.proboards.co...hread=3461
Though your charged voltage sounds low, maybe get your battery checked as well!

Also your battery should be 12.6 volts or better to be fully charged. Its probably time for a new battery.

Dallas, the battery should be at 12.6 at the very least after a full nite charge. Then when running, 2000 rpm should be about 13.5 volt's. You mentioned that it is an '81 engine on a '79 chassis. Did you change the harness? The '79 has a different way to charge the battery than the '81.
I belive you said your using the TCI ignition, di you swap out the regulator/rectifier also? What you can do is look through the post's in electrical on how the hook up the charging system to work on your application.Good luck,,,Gordo,,, Yamaman has a good link posted there, should be able to get the diagnose correct with that link.
