I'm sure this has been covered before, I searched but couldn't find it.

What is the best chain lube to use that doesn't spray oil all over the place?

With the o-ring chain I have been using 75-90 gear oil.......squirt on a couple revs and then using a rag and griping the chain wipe of the excess....that has been no big messes since then like the spray on sling off messes.....spose that would work with a conventional chain if the heavier oil got into the rollers........ ?

I applied some spray chain lube 700 miles ago and then wiped the chain clean, still oozing out and messing things up. Even some stuff that I had on my luggage rack got messed up today. I've seen "chain wax" at bike shops and was wondering how well it worked. An O-ring chain is in my future plans.

I haven't used chain wax but I've heard it's good. I'm using Gunk Chain Lube. It comes out very creamy and silverish white when applied. If you use the nozzel extension it doesn't make a mess and doesn't come off the chain after it's applied. (not that I've noticed or had to clean up anyway). I give the chain a quick shot every time I'm out for a few hours (once a week) and only do the accessible areas. The first time I did the chain completely. The chain seems happy.

I might try the chain wax next time, It's readily available and the brand my shop recommends.

mike youre the man on carbs and most everything else, but you must know that you arent supposed to use any petroleum products on an o-ring chain? thats why they make wax.

I've tried chain wax, and it worked well but what does sling off is a lot stickier when it gets on your wheel, etc. I now use cheap Castrol chain lube, try not to use too much and get it right between the chain plates not on the sprocket. Spraying it on when the chain is really hot helps... the thinners should evaporate and just leave the lube behind. Wipe off the excess after it has cooled down.

What ever you use , apply to the chain when hot, after a good long ride. As soon as you get home, pop it up on the center stand and apply as you spin the wheel by hand. let set over night and wipe off any extra.

They came with one from the factory. If it's not there somebody stole it.

rk did chains advertiseing again... My brother jim has a 84 gs750es, When the stock chain and sprockets wore out on the bike at 4000 miles of hard riding burn outs and wheelies. He ask what I would put on it and I told him a tsubaki omega with 10,000 pound tinsle strength. You know what that chain and sprockets still live on the bike today with 24,000 miles on the clock. Further more truith to the subject is yes GOOD chain manufacturers do want you to buy higher quality chain then whats recomended. The reason is in your pocketbook. better higher tinsel strength chains save you money with less replacement of both chains and sprockets. higher tinsel strength chains dont stretch as fast, which chain stretch is what wears out sprockets. But some companies will argue this and for good reason they are in the business of selling chains and usually sprockets too. If they dont wear out they will not sell any...

A friend of mine has 74 Harley FXE with a 93 inch shovel head. He runs CC Rider oring chain. He re[placed his when the clip type master link broke. He had that chain on for oevr ten years and 50,000 miles plus of riding. A good chain and proper maintaianence can make a chain last a long time.

A mate of mine has still got the original chain on his RD350LC, it's done a lot of miles!
He takes it off, cleans it & cooks it up in engine oil & slick 50 every few months! He just sprays a bit of CRC on it when it's hot. Still got plenty of adjustment left & all it's links!
