Quick question... My chain is brushing my rear tire a bit. I was wondering if I could shim out the rear sprocket with some washers to move the chain out a tad. I know these things are supposed to stay in a straight line but I didn't know if their was any tolerances.
Thanks for the help.

There is a thread about it at the garage here tinyurl.com/mnoyc2
I remembered that one as mine does it too. I don't worry about it .. just a few scuff marks. Best I can do.

Cool thanks for the reply! Mines nothing to really worry about ether, but its just something I would prefer not to be happening. I guess I just need to figure out if shimming it one washer would do damage to the sprockets or chain.
Thanks again.

You can shim out both..........here is how I would do it.......
aybe 1/8 inch spacer (washer) behind the sprocket...could use a bit of sealer if you want.....then spot weld the safety washer to the sprocket....this will keep the nut from turning when the washer is bent over the nut.....and use a bit of loctite ""blue"" on the nut and threads......
Then space out the rear with 1/8" thick washers........
Would think 1/8"on both ""front and rear"" would be max...........maybe 3/32" or 1/16"...........

Thanks for the reply john. I might do that when I go to replace my front sprocket then. I just bought a new rear 30 tooth. Going to try it out and maybe go with a 18 tooth front.
Thanks!

Bike lighter and if you don't weigh a bunch the 18 would make it a much much better highway bike..................carborize that 30 at a heat treating place and paint it and it will NEVER wear out................it just stays back there till you die of old age..........fronts are already hardened........
Last fall I finally broke down and bought a DID Professional O-ring chain.........maybe 4 thou on it and have not had to adjust it yet...amazing.....no more cheap chain for me.........just put a bit of heavy gear oil on it once in a while to lube the teeth.........

Cory, 18/30 and you won't go back. Nice to be going faster in MPH than your RPM in 5th, Ha!
Of course you'll lose a bit of the vibration. Is that bad?

I hear ya buddy! I rode to Madison for the Madison Car Show last weekend with my brother. I dont have a tach but I assume I was cruising at at least 4000 all the way there. At first I was like I gotta buy a bigger sprocket but after a while I almost went numb and couldnt feel it. lol.
We are we going to get together and ride? I went to Beatersville in Louisville last weekend too. Met a couple cool guys with some bad ass rat rod 650s. One of the took best foreign motorcycle trophy. Pretty cool!

Too bad these aren't smooth at 4000+ ... but the reality is they aren't.....things can be done to mellow that .... some things can make life better though...........and hopping it up isn't one for them.......

If you ever get back up Madison way let me know. There's some nice country roads in eastern Jefferson Co./western Switzerland Co.
Was wondering what type of ride your bro got.
