Adding turn signals

So Ive been working on getting my 79 legal and am adding turn signals. Problem is, the bike I bought has a very stripped down electrical system from the PO. My question is, should I tap power from lets say the headlight, or should I run a separate power line directly from the batt (or other source). I already have thermal flashers and am running traditional lights, not LED's. Thanks for any advice.

Thanks, but like I said, its not running the original harness so Im not even sure if there is a brown. I guess my main question is if I should run the signals completely independent or tap into something thats around.

there are three wires that come off your regulator, Black which is the Ground, Green feed from Alternator, and Light Brown which is the Output... that is the circuit you want to tap into for the power to your signal slector switch, just find it and get as close to the where your switch is mounted as you can, also supplies power to brake light switches, horn, ect. could go right off the switched power at the main switch if you want

I would tap in on the main power from the switch with a fuse.

If the stripped down harness is really bad I suppose you could get a replacement stock harness from mikes..$79 I think.

So I tapped into power ( same power as the headlight) , everything is cool except it seems to be pulling too much power I think? There is a main fuse at the battery that keeps blowing, causing the bike to not start obviously. My questions is do I need to put a resistor in? Or is there something else I am doing wrong?

Jayel,

The brown wire is not the output. The brown wire to the regulator provides power to operate the regulator and is also a voltage reference for the regulator. The brown wire feeds battery voltage FROM the ignition switch TO the regulator. The regulator works by varying the current to the rotor of the alternator via the green wire and the brushes.

In the case of '72 to '79 systems, the green wire supplies a regulated battery voltage to the green wire brush. The other brush is grounded.

In the case of '80 to '83 systems, the regulator supplies a regulated ground on the green wire brush, the othe brush is connected to the brown wire, where it gets battery from the ignition switch.

Hmm, thats good to know but none of my wiring is exactly the same as stock. Any ideas on how to solve my issue? I dont know all that much about electronics.

Dont really want to go down that route. I would much rather make what I have work. Everything is fine except the signals. Any other ideas?

Not really Dallas, your system is different from my old one, anything I say might lead you in the wrong direction. Get a diagram and study it, maybe you can find what you need to re-wire from there.

I think Im going to just run a fused power line directly off the battery for the signals to a switch. Is there anything bad about doing it this way? ie running the battery down faster, obviously this will happen if I were to leave the lights on, but I mean if it can happen just because its directly from the battery.

If you are blowing the main 20 amp fuse then you have a short circuit somewhere. If it only blows when you connect your turn signals, start looking at each individual turn bulb and socket for the short.

As for the wiring; jayel and xsleo have already told you how to connect it. Assuming you have an ignition switch; there will be a terminal and wire that is powered up when the ignition is turned on. From that wire/terminal, connect up a 10 amp fuse and run that wire to your turn signal flasher.
