I purchased an XS 650 last year that has been my tracker project. Bike had a title that was in his name, I filled out the space under as the new buyer and price. My question, do I send it off to have a title in my name sent to me and then go to DMV to get tags, or can I take this one I got with the bike that I wrote on transfering to me, to the DMV. I have owned a dozen bikes since the early 70`s, but most were new or just had a bill of sale. I have never bought a used bike from someone to tag.

Thanks xsthomas

?
Some states may differ but from my experience-N.J, and In.- just take it to the dmv and get the title transferred to your name and then registered at that time if you want the tags.
You may pay a 'fine' for not titling in a specified time from the purchase.

You did not mention your state. Put your location and your XS information somewhere in your profile so it shows up when you post. Easier for someone to help.

Ohio will invaladate the title without a notary stamp. You will need to go back to the seller and get him to get a replacement title. Then you both can go to the notary BEFORE you sign the title. Then it's off to the title agency.

In Ct., you just bring the title with a Ct. DMV bill of sale to the DMV, preferabley with a notory stamp. All paperwork is available at all DMV location's, free & without waiting in line.Notory's are all over, look in the white page's in the town/city where you live. Smile

I guess everyones different as I did not start spending money on my bike until I made sure I got the title in my name. Here in NM you need to have the title signed and dated by the seller along with a bill of sale. In NM the MVD can be a real pain making sure every bit of the paperwork matches and the bike need to be seen to verify the numbers on the bike to the #'s on the title. Now I new I would not be driving my bike for quite sometime so I got the title but I did not register(plate) it.

Having moved around a bit.....several states and a few countries...., I'd suggest going to your current DMV and getting their written requirements
and forms such as Bills of Sale etc....FIRST. Then affect your desired purchase.

However, everyplace I've lived usually required: New title first....usually inspection next, proof of insurance and then registration for license plate/tags.

See your local DMV. It's usually such a lovely place to spend a day or so.

Allmost worth it to live here just for the dmv. Not sure how other counties in the state are but here they're friendly and helpfull. NOTHING, I said NOTHING like my previous experiences in Jersey. Of course there are more deer in this county than people.
