to bad your bike is newer. My 73 runs a swing arm from a 80 and the later model arms are 2 inches longer than than stock 73. I had to switch to 14 inch rear shock to compensate.

amazing what 2 inches can do!!

Kyle,
I have a 71 and was thinking about extending the swingarm as well. Would the method you used also work for me?

thanks
Steve

Hi Skip my 79 swingarm is only 1 inch longer than my 70 but otherwise is slide in fit may need newer axle adjuster.

Thanks for the quick replies.
Does the extra inch make much of a difference in ride height? I was planning on using this in combination with shorter shocks to lower the back end a lot.

hahaha thats what she said...

extending the swing arm will drop the ride height considerably.
start with the extension then decide on some shocks. some of wiseguys 4'' extensions look pretty low with stock shocks on it.

The gs series Suzuki's have a swing arm that needs very little work to fit in our 650's. They are a longer than the stock swingarm.

The gs 550 is almost a bolt in. The gsxr may need more work. If your going to all the work of a mono shock then any swing arm is ok. The mods to do the mono shock will take more work than modding the swingarm.

i just built a 82 xs which should have the same swing arm as the 81. i stretched my swing arm 4inchs. to make mine i simply found dead center of the arm length wise. and using a chop saw cut the ends off at that point. next i stopped by the local metal supply shop and bought a 16inch piece of solid steel tubing i think it was 1 7/8 thick, but just measure your swing arm. next i dropped off one of the swing arm ends and the tubing at the machine shop and had them cut the tubing in half and turn down both ends of tubing so that way it would slid in to the swing arm. once that was done i slide the six peices together mounted it back on the bike with wheel and shocks installed to properly align every thing. tack welded the seems. last i removed the swing arm, drilled a couple guset holes and finished welding.

I bought a basket case '79 and it had these neat little brackets for pushing the lower shock mounts back about 2 inches. Was going to try them on my '78 but it looks like I have to loose my chain guard to fit them.

you really are better off with wise guys choppers selling you one, he may have some left, he sells on ebay, and off. just look for xs650 extended swingarm.

i just ordered one from him for my soft tail bobber project. he underbraces it so its sturdy. it looks good.

The YZ 250 swing arm is an extremely strong unit. Unfortunately is a mono-shock assembly. When its completed and shined, it will look sick. If I just buy this stuff, what am I going to do with all my machine tools and welding equipment. Here's a picture of the original
