i'm thinking about convering my points to a magnetic pickup .but was wondering if i realy needed the advance weights? what would happen if i scrapped them? and made it all solid.

Well then you're gonna have to come up with some other way to make the ignition system advance...

Just to help you understand a bit, some of the after market magnet pic ups us the advancing weights for the advancing curve, just like if they were points. Others, like the Boyer ignition have a computer controlled advanced curve. Correct me if I am wrong please.

some old time drag racers used to weld the advance on thier distributars. set the timing at what it needs to get max horse power at the rmp they ran down the track with. don't start well or idle well but worked at the rpm it was set for. i would either use a setup with a built in advance curve or use the stock advance setup. that way your engine will be timed right across the rpm range.

I like to keep the mechanical advance because by changing the weights or springs or the shape of the weights I can alter the advance curve to better suit mods to the engine.

Exactly.........

The Yamaha advance curve on the 80-84 is right on too........goes up nice a slow like it should......unlike some of the other electronics........
