Can anyone tell me the approximate weight of a 1980 xs650 engine? I need to ship one but can't seem to find a weight anywhere.... I suppose I could bring the scale down from the bathroom, but I'm not too keen on that idea. Thanks in advance, Justin

30 lbs beyond popping a 'rhoid, but 60lbs before a herniated belly-button.

Just lift with your legs.

Lifting these engines is a 2 man job, don't ever lift them alone, or you could end up injured. As I learned from other members on the site, just use 2 pipes and some nylon straps..............makes the job easy and safe.

I think I've heard about 150 pounds mentioned several times. I know it's a heavy lump and not a one man job as RG said. On my recently acquired parts bike, I tried the "lay the bike on it's side" routine for removing the engine by myself. It works but not as nice as the pipe handles. Then I still needed help from a second person to lift the motor up on my rolling table with my "handles". If you have a welder, you can make a permanent set by welding tabs on the pipes .....

I have a rope-hoist attached to the rafters that makes my life so much simpler.
When I put the Wiseco 750 kit on my '84, two of us dragged the motor up 4 flights of stairs, and put it on my kitchen table. Should have seen my wife's face when she came in from work that night. Shocked Rolling Eyes

Thanks for the info. My guess was around 150 lbs as well. I actually lifted the motor out of the frame and to the floor by myself, so it can't be much more than that! 150lbs is the maximum allowable weight by most ground shippers such as dhl and fedex. so I sure hope it's under. j

"lifted the motor out of the frame and to the floor by myself"

remind me not to get to lippy with you, I can move one of these lumps but I sure as hell don't want to be picking one of them up, I like Archimedes ideas, levers, ramps, pulleys, hydraulic thingees, or hire somebody else to lift it ect.

A reliable weight of 68.7 kg with no oil, carbs, boots or leftt side cover. Some photos show a weight reduction of 12 kg if your keen enough to spend some time with a drill Shocked

No not mine. Ivan Hoey races over here and he done this to get as much weight off as possible.........Imagine this ..... Rephased 840 kit, oversized valves, ported head and a specially made set of primary gears coupled to 17/34 sprockets gives him a top speed of 151mph. Apparently Ivan is getting 68bhp @ 8000 revs in 4 th gear

I think he maybe done it to improve cooling. I mean if takin' weight off was his intent, you'd think he would have done it to the top case and the side covers, too.

Has some hols in the side covers as well.........The 68.7kg is before the drilling. 56.8kg after the drilling, 12kg is a lot of weight to loose when racing

Ok for racing I suppose, damned ugly on the road! Personally Id rather take a good dump or go on a diet to lose the extra weight Laughing

(BTW . My 840 recorded 65 BHP on a rolling road test with standard cam & crank )

I thought it looked quite "Spirit of St Louis" actually I quite liked it, but I am p*ssed Smile LOL...

Then I got this mental image (doubtlessly untrue) of a really fat bloke riding a bike with loads of holes drilled in it. Which made me chuckle (again apologies, God only knows why I feel the need to share this)..

I knew this guy once from Liverpool and he was only 4ft 11 and very slight, really nice bloke, and totally uncatchable on a mildly tuned RD350YPVS, my bike was much faster technically speaking, but he used to just ride away from me on the line, very frustratin'

I saw this guy on a lowered Harley fat-bob down in Mt. Pleasant, IA (jayel country). Damn thing was barely an inch and a half off the ground. The rider probably weighed 500 lbs. I noticed him when I came up behind him on my XS11 because slabs of the rider were hanging off the seat on both sides to where they nearly dragged on the ground. From the side he looked like a heap of wet greasy mud. The logo on his tank read "low & fat is where it's at." I said "amen, brother" and slid on by.
