Well, I'm on the road about 20 miles from nowhere when the bike (1981 xs 650 bobber) starts to backfire. Not bad at first, but worse and worse till I' running on the shoulder, the bike popping and breaking up. I manage to limp home, the bike mainly running awful in third gear and midrange, even though it'll start and idle fine. replace the plugs and the problem is still there. I'm thinking it may be a bad coil (it's only got one). It was just filled up with fresh gas, and both plugs look fine if a little dark. Could it be something else as well. It's got the stock pointless ignition, with all the little black boxes. Any help would be appreciated!

Check connections and connectors for corrosion. Are the plugs and leads in good condition? Are you getting full battery voltage at the TCI and at the coil? Is your battery and charging system giving you 13.5 volts at idle and 14.5 at 2500 RPM? The fuse panels are known to just fall apart..............check the panel and check all fuses are clean and good contact.
After that, measure the resistance from one spark lead to the other without resistance caps..............should be about 11K ohms. Measure the pick-up coils resistance.................black to orange=700 ohms, black to grey=700 ohms.
If all that is good, then need to consider that the TCI unit is the problem.

Well I waschecking the wiring and pretty bummed fuguring it was not going to be cheap when low and behold! A bare wire and a ground lead without a connection. Having had a chance to get it out and ride it today, but it sure fired up nice once I regrounded it : )
The moral? check the simplest (and cheapest) things first. Let you know tomorrow if that was it.
