I have a 83 xs 650 heritage completely stock with only 5600 miles. The problem I have is it will only run with the choke on. I recently purchased it. I test rode it 5 miles prior to buying it and it started to surge and then died. I got a great deal needless to say as a result. The previous owner had the carbs cleaned and adjusted this spring and he only rode it a total of about 25 miles after the work was performed. It has new plugs and air filter. Any suggestions will be appreciated!

thanks,
Allen Question

Pilot circuit needs a complete cleaning including the tiny holes in the throat that lead from the pilot and a 45 pilot jet to start with......custom needles and a 135MJ would finish it off...............xsjohn

Thanks for the info! I'll try it and let you know what happens. I cleaned the bowls and fuel tank and have it running on the right cylinder, but can no luck on the left side yet ( been out of town and haven't got back to it)

[b]xsjohn, how do I access the pilot circuit on bs38's ? I've had them off already and thought I had cleaned them pretty well, compressed air and cleaner, but I still have a problem with stalling out after a few miles and hard starts, also the right cylinder runs hot so I turned out the airmixture screw to 3 or so. Thanks in advance

Remove the pilot jet and block open the throttle plate/butterfly. As you spray cleaner watch the 3 little holes in the throttle body to see if they flow.
Remove the mixture screw and do the same. Look at the small holes in the side of the needle jet to see if they're open. Also there is a small hole in the side of the choke pick-up tube that needs to be clear.
Could it be a spark problem and not the fuel?
