Something that has bugged the s**t out of me because I like to know how far I've been so I don't run out of fuel.
I looked on the parts microfiche and the stem actually had a part number
#584-83578-71-00. I found what seemed to be a close match on fleabay although the part number was off a bit , stated as 584-83578-70 on the auction. It came and today I was in the wrenching mode, changing oil and filter for the first time on my little 06 Ninja.
Took the speedo off and had to remove the headlight to disconnect the turn signal canceling sensor from the headlight bucket. Took it off and what I had was the old stem was broken off down inside just a bit. There is a rubber grommet that goes in the hole around the stem. Note the difference in the length between the broken one and the new one.
It had some glue and with a small screw driver I managed to work it out.
If you look down inside there is a silver threaded stem sticking out inside.
I tried to thread my new one on as a test fit. Reverse threads , turn it clockwise and it comes off, counter clockwise it tightens and eventually it turns the trip meter to reset. Unfortunated mine was bent a little from the original impact I suppose and had some wobble. Very carefully I managed to bend it back pretty straight using my new (hoped the sob didn't break my new one!) stem. Took off the new stem .Carefully worked the grommet back on. Inserted new stem. Looks and works fine. I'm set back to zero miles. Very Happy

more..I've got the pictures out of sequence but I hope I made it understandable about what I did. Not terribly complicated but when I tried to find some info on this I really didn't.

pumps I've seen this issue a couple of times. I'm sure your post will help someone in the future.

I've not wrenched on this bike a whole lot yet as it hasn't really needed it too much. Mechanically it has been ok but eventually I will be tearing into it to get it painted and some other stuff and while it is apart I will be doing more. Usually I just DO and then think after , maybe I should have documented what I did? This time I remembered....:)

I noticed mine makes a very slight clicking feel/sound as it turns..Maybe the threads on the stem are stripped? I might try to unscrew it and try to screw it on another screw of the correct thread to see if they are gone?
