go to a plating shop. They go both ways, not that there is anything wrong with that.

I have done it only by using a bead blaster/ sand blaster. After the shine has been roughed up you can prime and paint it like normal metal.

I used a bead blaster took a long time I made sure the whole thing is rough. clean it well wo get all the residue off and I used acid etching primer for the first 2 coats and switch to good primer then to paint and clear. I have heard tale that ice blasting if you have someone in your area that does that is much less abrassive and more envormentally friendly.
