I picked up an 82 XS650 Herritage Special just before Thanksgiving and I am just now finding the time to dig into it. It hasn't been on the road since '93 and the guy that I got it from said that it was having carb problems when he quit riding it. I'm planning on rebuilding the carbs, cleaning up the gas tank and petcock, and then attempt to start it. During carb teardown, I discovered that the seat for the carb plunger on the right carb was damaged. Does the damage mean that the carb is trashed? Also, neither plunger has a pin located on the end, as indicated in my Yamaha service manual or on Mike's website. should the plungers be replaced? The damage to the seat basically looks as though half of the seat was broken off. I've enclosed a couple of pictures that I hope can clarify what I am referring to. Thanks in advance for any help.

Is that gook down in there...........that seat on mine is bored into the bottom of the hole and can't be replaced...........hope it is just gook............seems that donut like surface in there has to be flush and clean or the choke may leak when off.......not really good news if that is hosed.........again I hope it is dried gas............

Then again mine is an 80 and the body right there may be different.....will look at later fish and be right back.......

There's plenty of gook down there but I'm afraid that the seat is definately damaged. And you are right. the seat does look like it is machined into the carberator body. The left carb's seat (donut) is smooth, flat and intact. Is the right carb trashed?

Afraid so.....now you could block it off and start the bike on one carb choke.....but those carbs are lean it might not be as easy........if you block it off is what I would try......get back with me if you wish....I have some needle kits to make those run BSers like a top........and fix some other things too......

Found the fish and the 82 looks like the 80....and the plunger tip is broke off on yours...down in that hole I bet...maybe that is where the problem started for the last person...........here is a plunger of mine......
