Checking out the member photos, something struck me. My 81' has a crossover tube on the exhaust the has rusted away. I have a piece of fence tubing in place of it right now(not a real tight fit but it helps, I hope)
y understanding is that crossover helps to balance the exhaust. Is that correct, and would that not working properly contribute to the engine heating up? What do you think?

Good point Bob. If I remember right the crossover is supposed to "equalise" exhaust gasses. On the other hand, there are tons of scooters out there without a crossover that run great.

I would be concerned about the "fence pipe" simply because if you just have it shoved in each exhaust it could be restricting smooth exhaust flow and also allowing cold air to be drawn up to the valves, maybe warping them. I'd want any pipe in that position welded in for that reason.

Not much of an answer I know but just some thoughts to get your mind around.

The tube does help to equalize, and contributes to better flow. If the pipe you have is inside the mufflers, this contributes to blockage. It will slow the flow, which will build up heat. It will act like a plugged converter on a car. It won't be quite that extreme, but you get the point. Sounds like you have a good excuse for a nice system now.

thanks for the input guys. the fence tube is actually on the outside of the existing rusted tube so it shouldn't be restricting anything but I'm sure it is allowing air in, so I'm sure it's not good. Don't ride all that much(boo hoo) so hopefully I can wait till the wallet will let me ge that new 2into1 Mac I've been thinking about. Enjoy what's left of the good weather and ride safe.
