I have a '76 that I purchased with a very bad gas tank, dented and severe internal rust. I have obtained a gas tank off a '78 special that has the vacuum petcocks. If I use this with my '76 that does not have the vacuum attachments can I cap the vacuum and just run it with the petcocks set to prime? Or do the petcocks need to be modified. I have found on the internet where I can purchase an adapter and replace them but that is very expensive.

Thanks all for the help!

switch the insides of the vacuum petcocks one side to the other and they will operate as regular valves

Thanks for the reply. I am not following you completely. When you say switch the insides do you mean the lever part of the petcock from right side to left?
or do you mean the diaphragm part? Then when they operate normally will that be prime is off, on is on and res reserve?

You can run them as is in the "Prime" position but you will have no reserve. The "Prime" position pulls fuel through the shorter reserve pipe.

There's a write-up on the 650 Wiki site on how to swap the parts and do the conversion .....

Or you can get new mechanical ones from mikes. I have one on my bike, and so far works great.

INXS
I did consider the option of replacing, but if I can make the originals work for free I will spend the money I save elsewhere. Just about all of my reguild budget is going to Mikes already.

I did the change following the instructions on wiki. I think I am going to flip the plates over and restamp them with the correct settings, OFF, ON & RES instead of PRI, ON & RES just to save some confusion in the future.

Thanks to all for the assistance.
