Did they not want to give you dimensions of it? If they wont tell you, I'll pull the rotor off mine this weekend (might even have one out somewhere), no drama

Seems hard information to get from these guys
It would be a great help if you could tell me the size then I can sort one out for my self. And all others 650 guys wanting to go this way
You could also call it a Christmas present maybe if you want

Thanks Yamaman

I have a question here.
On the bikes that are listed as swap in for the stator on mrriggs's auction, I have some experience with some of those bikes. They have the stator fit into the left engine cover, of course there are some that the alternator is a separate unit but no matter ...
Why do we need a bracket. I am thinking of fitting it into the outer case.

Also can I do a all stock bike, battery, kick starter all lights etc etc with a permanent magnet conversion. I suspect I can, just want to make sure.

The other thing I'd suggest, some of those bikes listed have the stator and rotor in the wet zone. As in they get splashed with oil. That limits their temperature and can prevent it from getting too hot.
I would suggest making air flow holes in the cover to sorta make it catch some wind and cool itself down.
Cool.

You need a bracket to mount the stator to the engine. This conversion has very limited choices (that we are currently aware of) on which flywheel will work. The RZ350 and banshee flywheel both sandwich (so to speak) the stator between the flywheel and engine, so mounting the stator to the left engine cover is not possible.

There are other bikes that have the stator mounted to the engine cover, and the flywheel is basically flipped around on the crankshaft. Unfortunately, there are zero known units that will work on the XS in this configuration.

If you've got access to a multitude of different bikes to test fit some of the reversed components to the XS - I say go for it. The more options on parts that'll swap, the easier and cheaper it will be to do this conversion.

I'm pretty sure this can be done to an all stock points ignition bike, but not sure on the stock TCI bikes (80-84). I think you may have to do additional stuff due to the pickup on the stock stator/flywheel.

Air holes aren't a bad idea, but I wouldn't suggest putting any in the cover facing forward. I'd hate to see a bunch of road grime/bugs/water get in around the flywheel.

I'd definetly check, but we need the bracket cos its a reverse from how it is on the other bikes that its fitted on. Gotcha.

Holes in front will suck in all sorts of crap, yea. Maybe a mesh to cover it, or louvers, wherever, I am still fiddling my stock XS that wont charge.

The whole idea of doing this to my rephase bike is to get the timing done with the inductive pickup style pick up's splayed at 83 degrees on the case. and better yet, I'd prolly get the rotor, stator, pick up's, regulator and the ignition box all from that same bike.
I am thinking something like a seca cos I know of where there is one with all these parts intact, and better yet, I already cannibalised the igniton box from it to try on my virago, managed to fix mine and found out that the seca one is awfully close to a virago 750 of that same vintage. Mine was a 1100 and very different, mine had vacuum advance in addition to centrifugal advance.

Anyway I am thinking about this, and will be very dangerous I will be sure in the end.

Cool.

If anyone is good with auto cad and can whip up a dwf or a dxf file for an adapter plate I would gladly put them on my friends cnc machine and cut out a bunch,I'm running the banshee plate which is fine after 3000 miles but a sturdier mount would be desirable for everyone. And if someone gives me a heads up on what measurement they need,I'll get it for you cause I got a bunch laying around from my pma mods

If you can get me the hole locations and standoff height from a banshee plate i can do one up in CAD for you. Get me all your measurements and well get this rolling. I'll make it as efficient possible. Let me know what file format your friend would want to run the program if he has a preference.

Machining them from a solid chunk of billet would normally be pricey (probably $10-15 a piece not including machine time). Let me know if that's a problem. if so It would have to be done as a two piece.

That plate is very similar to mine, doesn't really need to be milled, could easily be made with a jig saw & a drill. Doesn't need to "stand off" is just flat plate. I'd like to know if there is an actual difference between a RD/RZ 250/350 stator & rotor and a Banshee. I know the motors are virtually identical.

Some have gone to a lot of trouble to fit the Banshee setup (like mrriggs).
Mine & Wally's (& I think despecials) are simple flat plate. Not sure why?

Have a pic of your setup yamaman? I was assuming the rotor would have to standoff the base of the plate for it to fully be enclosed by the stator. If it can be done with a simple plate, without the use of a rotor bracket, that would obviously be the best way to go.

Here's a question that was posted back in June at the XS650 Garage that addresses this:

"MrRiggs, for your adapter plate, are you doing something different than the two (supposedly) already out there?

Here's mrriggs' answer:

"Those adapters are used for adapting an entire RZ alternator to the XS. They won't work when using a Bashee rotor because the spacing is different. My bracket wil bolt straight to the engine and the stator will bolt to it. No need for a stock Banshee bracket."

Since RD/RZ parts are probably more plentiful in your part of the world, the RD/RZ solution may make more sense there. Here, the Banshee is probably more plentiful, so mrriggs' bracket is a great solution.

In any case, I'm very pleased with my bracket (and the installation instructions) from mrriggs. It made the conversion very easy for me.

Wally, a RD/RZ woodruff key is 5mm thick, 6.4mm high & 15mm long.

Hope that helps you out. Could you or someone please post XS key size & Banshee key size.

Sorry Wally, my puller is awol, otherwise I'd have done the whole damn lot for ya!

As soon as I do find it, I'll pull it & get some pics of my setup, I reckon it's pretty cool!
