For a Christmas present this year I received a 71 XS!
This bike was repo-ed in 1974 by a friend of my Dad's. He liked the bike so he decided to buy it from the finance company. It has 3,400 miles on it. This guy then tore the motor out and bored it out to 750. Over the next several years he rarely had time to work on her and never even got around to cranking her up. Then around 83 he found inspiration and got a cafe fender and bubble fairing and painted the tank and all the plastic. After that he got involved in his other bike projects unit he sold it to my Dad. So know I have a 71 with a fresh motor and brand new paint job.
So my project, the forks on it where just so he could move her around and he wanted them back. I sold the original 71 forks (came with the bike uninstalled) and I've traded wheels with AirHog to run this,
I am going to pick up the forks and trees from an 83 special today. I know I will have to over come the stem length difference, might try using the 83 stem and then just use tapered bearings and spacers to make it fit. After the front end is sorted out I really just need to work out wiring and other small stuff.

Nice bike
to bad however couldnt find an original drum front end and keep her period correct. Theres not many that are as they were in the old days, and alot of updated ones. But either way its very cool.

Had the original, I want something to ride, not keep correct. I traded the original for the disk because I like the look better and trust the stopping more.

OK so today made some progress,
Got the new front end too
Now we get to the problem with switching front ends from a 71 to a later model
The neck of the 80 is longer. I did notice however the diameter and taper are the same. I'm thinking that one solution may be to thread the new neck all the way down and then cut cut a little off the top.
That's as far as I've gotten thus far.

One of the things I like least about my bike is the one thing I don't have a clue how to handle. The rear fender is fricken HUGE!!! I think that the big-a$$ chrome fender is the motorcycle equivalent to granny-panties, NOT SEXY. Can the fender be stripped and painted? I'm thinking that with a slim budget if I could trim the fender by a couple of inches and then paint it I may be able to look at it for a year or two while I figure out the next step. Thoughts?

- there are 2 different rear guards...the long one from the standards and the short one from the specials - which do you have?

- nice score....your guard will be the longer standard
- just actually had a look at what youve got - i like these motors the best ... ok the frame is rather flexy, it has the 34mm forks, the old 6 disc clutch that you cant get parts for any more, the 256 crank rods and pistons that you also cant repair easily etc, but, the motor has the larger sump and crankcase volume because there is no damned estart, and the front left rocker cover is triangular and matches the rest-its before the decompression modification that came when the estart was introduced for the XS2, and it has the tank i like
- i have 1 of these motors sitting in bits - one day i want to throw 1 of my 533 rephased cranks into it along with a later gearbox and clutch

The neck on your stock triple tree looks the same as a 36mm xs750 triple tree that I have.

OK been thinking about the "look" of the bike. Paints in great shape but sort of bland. I'm no photoshop expert and this was done in Paint but you'll get the idea. Let me know what you guys think.

Hey, I like that look, white with the black stripe. Both my cycles are white, the cafe/roadster has a 3" black stripe down the tank. I like the classic and simple lines that it has and I reckon that your bike is just that. Good job, I like it. John.

What about black and white checkers? maybe like this? But in reverse? On the tank and tail? I like the stripe too, but what about 2 thinner racing stripes parallel like on the old hot rods?

There are three types of guard...........the 70-73 256 models have the guard that is on your bike curt698 and there are some minor variations between the XS1-1B and the XS2 and TX, these guards are rare to find in good condition..........the 74-79 standards are different to the 256 models and longer than the 78-83 Specials
