Currently in the process of building a custom bike. Bike is a 1979, and I will be making my own wiring harness and running a pamco ignition. Trying to do some research and read lots about aftermarket regulators, stock etc...

My question is, I got my hands on two solid state xs650 regulator/rectifiers one has a single pigtail with 7 wires , and the other has 2 pigtails with 6 wires.

What year bikes are these from? Are either worth using? If so, how will I go about wiring these up to my 79?

Thanks,

MIKE

- the 7 wire may be 3 field , 2 pos and 2 neg...the 6 wire may have a voltage sensor wire for the estart, 1 pos and 1 neg...

- wont know without knowing the cable colours...have a pic?

hutch08,

In any case, you will probably have to isolate the grounded brush and apply switched battery to it as most of the solid state regulators require battery on one brush instead of ground, unless one of the regulators you have was built for a grounded brush.

Ok so I'm not even sure if these are xs650 reg/rect's anymore, even though i was told so...

No pictures but heres some info:

Single Harness 7 wires

White x3
Brown
Red
Green
Black

and the part # looks like 3G1-512f1s8515

Double Harness 6 wires

Yellow x3
Black
Green
Red

part # SH532-12

Hope someone can make some sense of this...

Well, as far as I can tell, the SH532-12 is for these Hondas:
NS250R/ NS400R/ CBX250RS
Not sure if it will work for you or not!

The first one looks like a Yamaha part though, will probably do the job!

Yeah, confirmed that the first one should be off an 80+ xs650...

As for the other one, im not willing to fiddle with it to make it work, wiring isnot my thing, unless someone has already used a reg/rect off a honda.. haha

So for using the 80+ how do I go about wiring this up to my 79 alternator, I know I have to replace those 3 screws, anything else? what colors go together?

Thanks!

You should be able to use one of them no problem,Don't laugh I"m running a suzuki gs 550 reg/rect on my xs however I have a pma but i don't think that matters Pamco is really good with this stuff. Colored wires should be as follows 3 yellows to stator, red switched hot,black-hot,green-ground. There all pretty much the same as long as there 3 phase, just hook one up and check battery readings i bet it will be fine.

If it is a reg/rect off of a '80 to '83 then this is how it is wired. As I mentioned above, you will have to isolate the grounded brush and apply power to it instead.

Wow thats like the exact wiring diagram i need.. Minus the speedo/horn... and i'll be running a 3 position ignition, off, on, and start.

whats that "box" that has a brown and green wire going to it?

also, isolating= using the 3 nylon screws, how do i go about applying power to it?

and is it just my imagination, but for some reason, i think my alternator as more than those 5 wires coming off it? or am i wrong? (sorry not at home to check)

THANKS!

The brown & green go to the brushes.

The yellow wire runs (un-rectified AC voltage) to the safety relay, so needs to be capped off if not used.
