Hi all.
I just acquired a 1976 XS650. It belonged to my wife's grandfather and has been passed through the family. Everyone has grown tired of it and were ready to throw it out.
I happened across it while talking to my brother-in-law. He was ready to give it away to the first person that would get it out of his barn.
So, now I have it.
It appears to be about 99% complete. Some of the wiring is a little butchered but easily fixable. He did tell me that the last time he had it running it was missing badly and had some sort of noise in the engine. doesn't sound good, but I am confident I can get it going again.
The paint and decaling are in remarkably good condition and should clean up nicely.
When I got it home, the front forks would not come up after being pulled down and strapped to the trailer.
After some looking it looked like they didn't compress evenly and they got in a bind.
I put it up on the stand and smacked the axle nut with a rubber mallet and the forks released. I bounced the bike as hard as I could (I am a good sized fella) and they never stuck. I think they'll be fine after an oil change.
This should be a fun project. I also have a '96 Vulcan 800A. This bike I am sure will ride quite differently.
I included some photos and I may start a thread on the re-build. I am thinking frame up restoration.
What are your thoughts? The bike does have some sentimental value to my wife (who also rides).

Welcome BG4D,
That is a real nice bike you have there with all the original parts and they look to be in good condition.........look in the vault for starters, that should get you on your way.

Welcome, I'm a new 650 owner too, and new to this board. Your bike looks to be in great shape, look forward to reading about your progress.

Dave

I would like it much more if it were mine! Kudos on keeping it as original as possible. Just cleaning it will likely make it look like a new bike. Congrats on a great score, and please keep the pics coming.

Welcome ! Great looking ride. I always like that french blue color scheme. Love the braced front fender.I would probably start with a basic tune-up per the manual and then start polishing! If the wife rides and the bike has sentimental value she won't mind if you spend lots of time working on it and money on parts! For me, my thing is I'm not making a payment, insurance is cheap so I can spend some money on parts. I don't know where you are but I've got all winter to wrench!. Have you got a manual? Something to get you started maybe until you can get a book.
