OK I am obsessed with having the air box in place cos I believe it makes the bike last a lot longer.

However so far that has not been much of an issue on any of the 40 bikes I have had, but this 82 XS650 special I have recently got probably will need to give.

I have all the parts to do this and most of the knowledge. But the air box is getting in my way of my dreams.

A GS500 swingarm which I have will drop right into the XS frame, its within 1/4 inch in the pivot area. With that I get the pivot of the suzuki as well.
I also get a monoshock and a capacity to run a disk brake 4.5 inch wheel if I toss in a Kat 98+ wheel. Offset front sproket is all I'd have to fab which trust me, is easier on a XS than it is on the GS.

Then I have to fab up a upper shock mount which is a joke, I plan on fitting a new model GSXR upper clevise that has a bolt sticking through the thing which give me ride height with washer stack

Then I have a 89-90 KLX550 if I remember (year and model right) tail section which is aluminum and weighs all of ... 3 lbs OK exaggeration, but its beefy square tubing ... and get this, it would almost directly fit the XS frame. The top fits right ~1-2 inches below where the tank bracket sits and the bottom would fit on the inside of the frame just where your ankle would go if you were sitting on the bike. The best part is, the seat section of the KLX is 1/4 inch away from the frame in both cases. Making for a perfect situation where you plate and weld and adjust its center with washers and bolt it in.
I can point it 10-15 degrees upward lower it at the front so I sit lower and sportier and the best part of all this ... I already have all of these parts with no use for them really.

So is there a clamp on type filter that is as clean for the bike as the stock filter and I guess I should just make up my mind and go for it.

Do the K&N type filters with sock over them work to clean it up ?
Cool.

cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotor...ccessories

That is the subframe I am talking about.
GS500 swingarms 89-09 - all the same except for colors.
I have 2-3 cos I modded up a few to fit RGV or GSXR ones.
Cool.

I also could do this with an aluminum RM250 swingarm and retain spoke wheels. I am prolly going to do that I guess at this point.
Its too tempting to shed 100 lb of weight, upgrade the whole lot and get the look I like. The kicker ... I may keep the air box after all.
Cool.
