I was planning to add my '73 TX to my Progressive policy. I had entered an Agreed Value of $2,000.00 in the web form, but with even as low as $1,500.00, the form tells me that an inspection is required for the bike. Maryland does not require an inspection for historic tags, for which I intend to apply.
I'm wondering if the need for the inspection is because I selected both collision and comprehensive insurance. This who "inspection" thing is an incredibly annoying "revenue collection" implement and I'd hoped to avoid it.
Any recommendations?

Who does the inspections? Here in MO most of the larger garages and service stations are "Licensed Official Inspection Stations". The local motorcycle place is where they do my safety inspection when i renew my tag. They give me a slip to show to the license peeps and affix an inspection sticker to the bike. Is the insurer wanting to inspect it to value or do they want a shop to give it a safety inspection? I think its $12 to get mine inspected.

Pumps, this is what I'm asking the insurer. I don't mind if they want to ensure that I'm not telling them I have a $2,000.00 bike that's really worth a tenspot. But I don't want the insurer levying a requirement upon me that's been waived by the state. Inspections in MD are SIXTY CLAMS! Doesn't make sense to me that an insurer's stipulation should contraindicate state law.

It seems to me that you ought to be able to just show it to them or their adjuster? and demonstrate it is not some old piece of s**t. And should be good enough. If they want the $60 inspection let them pay for it!

Progressive asked the same thing from me when I insured my XS for the 6grand I have into it. I got the inspection from a local appraiser and everything was OK. Progressive just doesn't want to give people more then what their bikes are blue booked at unless there's documented and corroborated evidence that it's worth more.

Guys, it's straightened out. One of their reps told me in writing that the only bikes that need inspections are ones with agreed value of 15k or more, or with 7k or more of accessories, or 7.5k or more in additional equipment. She certified that I would not need an inspection as I placed the agreed value of my bike at 2k. So, she's insured. Now for tags.

Well, I dropped off all the paperwork with the title service yesterday. So in the coming week, I hope to be hanging an historic tag on this gal.
Some of you will recall when I first brought her home as a non-runner. Thanks once again for all the help thus far!

pumps, I'm using a teeny tiny little local firm. Their fee is $40.00 in addition to MVA tag and titling fees, and taxes. It's worth it because I don't have to take time off work, and this lady knows what she's doing.

The amount you're paying for insurance does't mean a thing if you don't tell us what you bought. State required minimum liability varies by state and usually isn't enough to cover anything. Injuries can be expensive and subject you to lawsuits if you hurt someone and don't have enough insurance.
I've been carrying $300K single limit liability on two bikes and it's still pretty cheap, probably because of my age. Liability on my XS1100 is three times more expensive than my XS650. I've been isured by Progressive since 1983. FWIW, they won't give me a break even though I haven't cost them anything.
